Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Devin Bailey, owner of Imagine Performance Therapy, LLC., located in Fort Worth, TX, USA.
What’s your business, and who are your customers?
Imagine Performance Therapy is a private pay sports physical therapy and performance practice. I specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of sports and orthopedic-related conditions. I started this business with the goal of targeting active individuals. Health and fitness are an important aspects of my daily life, and I strive to show others how they can become active or remain active despite minor aches and pains. Additionally, I provide performance-based treatment. Recovery is an important aspect of performance when it comes to athletics. Helping athletes take care of their bodies, recover better and stay on track with their training programs leads to healthier, more successful competition seasons!
Tell us about yourself
I have been a competitive athlete my entire life. I have also struggled with injuries along the way. I tore my ACL playing soccer, and that was what initially sparked my interest in physical therapy. I had surgery and went through insurance-based physical therapy. I did get better, but I did not get back to my 100% competitive level by the time I was discharged from physical therapy. There were a lot of missing pieces. I was still weak, out of shape, and lacking a lot of confidence when it came to competition. I knew at that time that there had to be more that could be done as a physical therapist to prepare athletes for a full return to sport. I spent nearly six years in an insurance-based clinic, and I started to identify the barriers that stood between patients and getting the care they deserved. I personally know the struggles and hard work it takes to get back to competition; each day, I am motivated by my experience with physical therapy as a patient and not wanting my patients to feel like they are kicked to the curb before they have truly reached their 100%.
What’s your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Having the guts to start my business. I took a big risk here. I walked away from a job with a steady paycheck and health benefits to venture into the unknown. Along the way, I have turned down multiple other jobs because I now know they are not what I am passionate about. So, to sum that up, my biggest accomplishment is that I found my passion. And finding that passion, it allows me to better serve my patients!
What’s one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Rejection. Physical therapy is not a one size fits all. My philosophies may not be the perfect fit for everyone, and that is ok. You have to have tough skin as a business owner.
What are the top tips you’d give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Know what you are passionate about; this allows you to better serve your clientele. People can smell fake from a mile away!
- Get to know other business owners. Every meeting I have, there is always a takeaway. Even if it is not a business that serves the same type of clientele as you. There is ALWAYS something to be learned.
- Set boundaries. You have to have some sort of work/life balance. It is ok to say no. If you do not take care of yourself, you will have a very hard time taking care of your clients.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
Starting a business is one of the most nerve-racking but also rewarding things I have ever done. Every mistake I make is mine; every success I have is mine. It is not an easy road, but I have met and gained so many amazing supporters that it has made the experience way less daunting!
